The Doors Are Opening
When I wrote this book, I kept coming back to one hope. That a child would sit with one of the parts: Cactus, Freeze, Disco, Cozy, and feel something shift. Maybe just a small thing. A quiet recognition. Oh. That’s me. And that’s okay.
I can already picture it. A child’s voice calling out from the back of the room. I’m Blazer! Or My sister is totally Cactus. A laugh. A nod. That moment when a story stops being a story and starts being a mirror.
Those feelings are parts of you. They are normal, and you are not alone.
That’s what this book is for. And now it’s time to take it into the world.
Coming Up
The first stop is a big one.
On May 6th, I’ll be reading at the 2026 Everyday Lives Virtual Conference, presented by the Office of Developmental Programs. I’ve been working on something special for this audience. A guide for adapting The Hallway of Doorknobs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. More details on that in a future post, but I’m genuinely excited about what this book can offer this community.
If you’re local, I’d love to see you at one of my library readings this summer. I’ll be at Tyrone-Snyder Public Library on May 14th, Roaring Spring Community Library on June 10th, Claysburg Area Public Library on June 11th, and Martinsburg Community Library on August 3rd. Each event is a read-aloud for children and families, and every child goes home with a free activity sheet.
On June 13th, I’ll be at Yoga Flow Shadyside in Pittsburgh for something close to my heart. My cousin Melissa is a yoga instructor, and we’re collaborating to bring mental health and movement together for kids through the book and yoga. When Melissa read The Hallway of Doorknobs for the first time, she sent me this:
“I was always told I was a people pleaser but couldn’t understand why. Disco ball explained it perfectly. After all these years of recovery and work, that character has changed my life.”
That’s why we’re doing this. More events with Melissa are planned. This is just the beginning.
On July 11th, join us for Summer Kids Day at Groove Fitness Studio in Altoona. I am so excited to collaborate with an incredible group of women who have turned their passions into businesses: Rachel Bites, Balloons by Jaida, and Memory Lane Co. It’s going to be a full afternoon: zumba, face painting, balloon animals, cookie decorating, and of course, the book. Healthy fun, big feelings, and good people.
