Sulima Malzin labels her book Tributaries a “slim volume of poetry,” and “words of homage and gratitude to poets & other artists.” Having read it three times and knowing I’ll keep rereading prompts me to pay homage to Malzin for her vivid, poignant, and memorable words. I was introduced to them by a friend who asked me to read them aloud with her, a perfect way to start.

The book introduced me to Cento, which is incorporating the words of others in your writing, crediting them as you do. Malzin notes, “…isn’t that just the thing about words? While they are intended for one context, they fit into so many other nooks and crannies. So, why not repurpose and reassemble them to create something more” (1)?

Some standout lines: “… Love can come poorly wrapped and stuffed into many different packages …(3).

“Breathe in what you can do. Breathe out what you can’t change. It is alright to be exactly what you are, who you are, where you are” (6).

As Emmett Wheatfall notes in his comments on the back cover of the book, “What is insightful about Tributaries is its humanity.”
